Description
These traditional German spice cookies offer a sophisticated blend of honey, aromatic Lebkuchengewürz, and a subtle kick of white pepper. Finished with a snowy sugar glaze, they are a sturdy, long-lasting holiday treat perfect for gifting or sharing with coffee.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Lebkuchengewürz
- White pepper
- Almond meal
- Brown sugar
- Honey
- Unsalted butter
- Heavy cream
- 1 Large egg
- Powdered sugar
- Hot water
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, Lebkuchengewürz, white pepper, and almond meal.
- Combine brown sugar, honey, butter, and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat; stir until dissolved and then let cool for five minutes.
- Mix the dry ingredients into the warm syrup, add the egg, and stir until glossy before wrapping the dough in plastic and refrigerating overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and roll the chilled dough into 3/4-inch balls.
- Place the balls on a lined cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown; transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Whisk powdered sugar and hot water into a thick glaze, dip each cookie to coat, and allow them to set on a rack until the shell is firm.
Notes
For the best flavor development, do not skip the overnight chilling process as it allows the spices to fully permeate the dough. If the glazed cookies stick to your storage container, separate the layers with parchment paper to keep the white finish pristine.
